A Bold New Solo Work from Zakiya Urbi Young

Coming April/May 2025

Suburban Black Girl

About

Outside In Theatre continues its commitment to developing and presenting groundbreaking solo performances with the limited run of Suburban Black Girl, written and performed by Zakiya Urbi Young and directed by Jacole Kitchen.

Through sharp storytelling and intimate honesty, Suburban Black Girl explores the complexities of identity, belonging, and the nuances of growing up as a Black girl in predominantly white suburban spaces. Blending humor, heart, and cultural commentary, Young’s deeply personal narrative invites audiences to examine race, privilege, and the universal search for self-acceptance.

In a time of national conversations about race and identity, Suburban Black Girl is a timely and vital exploration of the Black experience in spaces where it is often underrepresented or misunderstood.

Post-Show Panels & Community Engagement
To further the conversation, Outside In Theatre will host post-show panels featuring artists, scholars, and community leaders discussing themes from Suburban Black Girl and their impact on contemporary society. Panel details will be announced soon.
